Wallacehall Academy

The Wallacehall Academy , formerly also the Wallacehall Assessment Center , is a school near the Scottish town of Closeburn in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, together with the Closeburn Church and the Closeburn Primary School, it forms a category A monument ensemble .

history

John Wallace donated the school in 1723. The oldest parts of the building date from 1724 to 1729. The facility was substantially redesigned or expanded several times. After an extension in 1777, another building was added in 1795. In 1842 and 1882 the school was expanded again. Today it is a comprehensive school with over 500 students.

The Wallacehall Academy is a few hundred meters east of Closeburn. The original building is now part of the L-shaped east wing. The three-story new building from 1795 forms the core of the complex. The masonry consists of quarry stone, which was roughly cut into blocks. The building edges are set off in color with red corner stones . The main entrance on the west side is designed with pilasters , architraves and friezes . The building closes with a slate hipped roof . Various decorative plaster works can be found inside. In addition, a recess with a round arch and flanking Corinthian pilasters.

At the rear a two-story wing goes off at a right angle. Its masonry is made of quarry stone . The lattice windows are partially designed with center posts. A stair tower emerges on the south side, which ends with a stepped gable . On the east side there is a south-facing wing from 1882, in which the sports facilities are located.
