The pilgrimage church of St. Anna ( Poutní kostel sv. Anny in Czech ) is located about 2 km northwest of Planá u Mariánských Lázní (German plan ) in the direction of Kyjov ( Khoau ) and is an important pilgrimage site in the West Bohemian region.

history

The exact year of construction of the church is not known, but according to a legend, a knight Bohus from Planá had a chapel built on this site as early as the 9th century. In any case, historical sources mention a place of worship over 1000 years ago. Pilgrimages to the miraculous image and the St. Anna fountain have been recorded since the 13th century, the largest pilgrimage in 1740 with 4,200 believers.

After the church was completely burned out in 1721, the baroque building was created in its current form. In 1726 the church was reopened and in 1730 it was decorated with frescoes by the planner painter Wenzel Schmidt. The center of the high altar is the miraculous image on which Mary hands the baby Jesus into the open arms of her mother Anna .

The circular dome image with two opposite images by Wenzel Schmidt shows different vehicles. According to legend, six strong horses failed to pull a statue of the Mother of God up the mountain to the church. Only when a team of a horse and an ox was harnessed to the cart did the transport succeed.

In the 19th century, the church was used as a palace chapel for the Planners. In front of the western portal is a family crypt of the Counts von Nostitz- Rieneck from the beginning of the 20th century.

The Redemptorist monastery built next to the church in the early 1920s now serves as a hospital.

In 1953, displaced Sudeten Germans built a St. Anna chapel in memory of the pilgrimage church near Mähring in Upper Palatinate , which was expanded into a church in 1967.
