During the First World War , Haas served in the field artillery of the US Army .

When he returned to the United States in 1919, Haas began working for his father-in-law's company. At that time Levi Strauss & Co. was a small wholesaler and manufacturer of work clothes. In 1928 Haas was promoted to President and ran the company until 1955; he then served as chairman until 1970 and continued to take an active part until his death in 1979. The commitment of Haas (together with his business partner and brother-in-law Daniel E. Koshland sr., Father of the biochemist Daniel E. Koshland jr. ) Led the company through the global economic crisis and made Levi's a global brand .
