Walter Berger (oncologist)

Walter Berger (born October 19, 1963 in Reichraming , Upper Austria) is an Austrian cancer researcher .

Life

Berger graduated from high school in Steyr in 1982 and then completed community service . From 1983 he studied biology (physiology) and German at the University of Vienna . From 1988 to February 1989 he did his Masters at the Institute for Plant Physiology. He then worked in product and project management at Hoechst Austria until 1993 and, at the same time, completed a Ph.D. - Studies at the Institute for Tumor Biology / Cancer Research, Dept. Applied and Experimental Oncology. He completed this in 1993 and then held an assistant professorship at the institute until 2001. From 1998 to 1999 he did a research stay at Cambridge University . In 2001, he completed his habilitation in “Applied and Experimental Oncology” at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna and was then Associate Professor at the Institute for Cancer Research at the Medical University of Vienna . In 2004 he was appointed head of the research unit “Development of Experimental Cancer Therapies” at the Institute for Medicine I at the Medical University of Vienna and in 2010 he was appointed deputy head of the Institute for Cancer Research. In November 2013 he was appointed professor for applied and experimental oncology at the Institute for Cancer Research (IKF) at the Medical University of Vienna. In addition, the cancer scientist is an active member of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of MedUni Vienna and the Vienna General Hospital and has been their academic press spokesman since January 1, 2016.
