Walter Breker

Walter Breker (born April 2, 1904 in Bielefeld , † September 16, 1980 in Olsberg ) was a German commercial artist .

Life

After training as a lithographer from 1918 to 1922, Breker studied at the Bielefeld School of Applied Arts from 1922 to 1925 . In the next few years he worked as a graphic designer for various printing companies, for example for the companies Förster & Borries in Zwickau and Hartung & Co. in Hamburg. From 1928 to 1932 he was artistic director of the Albert Wohlfeld book printing company in Magdeburg and then tutor with Wilhelm Deffke at the Magdeburg School of Applied Arts . From 1934 to 1954 he worked as head of the department for graphics and book art at the Krefeld Werkkunstschule. In 1954 a new phase began: Walter Breker became professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and head of the class for commercial graphics. He held this office until 1969. Under his aegis, the photography department was expanded from 1951 to 1961 with the help of his then student Hilla Wobeser .

In parallel to his teaching activities, Breker was always active as a freelancer. He created posters, advertising, catalogs and book designs for the world exhibition in Brussels (1958), for the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf , for the Düsseldorf University and Music Weeks. But he also created logos for various companies such as the Frankfurter Messe , the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung or Erdal -schuhcreme. He was also the artistic director of the fashion magazine Pfau-Moden. Breker's main field of activity was always typography .

From 1951, Breker was chairman of the Düsseldorf-Niederrhein local group of the Federation of German Graphic Artists (BDG), and in 1956 he was accepted into the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI), a graphic artists' association founded in Paris in 1952.

Walter Breker died in Olsberg in 1980 at the age of 77. A large part of his estate is in Offenbach's Klingspor Museum .
