Walter Haas (politician)

Walter Haas (born January 9, 1920 in Osnabrück ; † February 10, 1996 there ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Haas first attended elementary school and later switched to secondary school in Osnabrück. He had to drop out of school because of the persecution and the death of his father after the seizure of power in 1933. He began an apprenticeship as a machine fitter, which he also completed. Haas then started working for the Klöckner works in Osnabrück. In February 1942 he was a soldier until the end of the Second World War . After the war he was taken prisoner. In 1947, Haas began working as an employee of a health insurance fund under the Reich law, which he held until 1954. In 1954 he became managing director of the Arbeiterwohlfahrt in Osnabrück. He held this position until 1963.

Haas became a member of the SPD in 1945. He has been elected deputy district chairman of the SPD for the Weser-Ems district. In 1958 he became a member of the party council.

Public offices

Haas was elected to the Osnabrück City Council in October 1946 . In the council he was elected chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in 1953 and appointed senator from 1955. He was also elected a member of the Lower Saxony State Parliament in the fourth to seventh electoral periods from July 4, 1959 to June 20, 1974. Haas was Vice President of the Lower Saxony State Parliament from July 8, 1970 to June 20, 1974.

Honors

Haas has been awarded the 1st Class Cross of Merit of the Lower Saxony Order of Merit and the 1st Class Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . In 1986 he received the Justus Möser Medal from the city of Osnabrück.
