Walter Hartmann (born September 8, 1925 ) was a football player in Lauter, western Saxony . With the BSG Empor Lauter he played from 1952 to 1954 in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

When SG Lauter became Saxon football runner-up in 1950, Hartmann was there as well as in the first season of the second-rate GDR league , which started operations in the 1950/51 season, in which SG successor BSG Freiheit Wismut Lauter was one of the founding teams. When the Lauterer, now renamed BSG Empor, rose to the league a year later, Hartmann was involved in 15 of the 22 championship games as a center forward or half-left attacker with six goals. Hartmann also played in all four finals for the league championship against BSG Motor Jena (1: 0, 1: 5, 0: 0 a.s., 3: 0).

In the first league season of the BSG Empor Lauter, Hartmann only played a subordinate role under the new coach Walter Fritzsch . In the 32 point games, he was only used in eight games. After Lauter had achieved relegation without difficulty, Heinz Pönert took over as coach for the 1953/54 season , and he no longer relied on the now 28-year-old Hartmann. After a substitution in the second championship game, Hartmann was only used as a midfielder on the last game day. After that, his senior league career ended after ten league games and one goal. Nothing is known about other games in higher-class football.
