Walter Köhnlein

Walter Köhnlein (born February 16, 1936 in Nuremberg ) is a German educator and university professor . From 1980 to 2001 he was head of the new field of didactics of non-technical teaching at the Hochschule / Universität Hildesheim , from 1993 director of the Institute for Primary School Didactics and Non-Technical Studies with the focus on theory and practice of non-technical teaching, research into the beginnings of science-related thinking in children and didactic processing of the Martin Wagenschein's pedagogy . He was a co-founder of the Society for Didaktik des Sachunterrichts (GDSU) and its 1st chairman from 1992 to 1997.

Life

Walter Köhnlein was a teacher at elementary and secondary schools, lecturer in physics didactics at the University of Education and Bayreuth University . In 1980, the state of Lower Saxony appointed him to the first professorship for didactics of subject teaching . At the University of Hildesheim he founded (together with Horst Schaub) the Institute for Elementary School Didactics and General Education. He had a decisive influence on the development of the didactics of subject teaching and its establishment as scientific subject didactics in Germany. Immediately after reunification, as a co-initiator and later chairman of the founding board of the Gesellschaft für Didaktik des Sachunterrichts eV (GDSU), he made a significant contribution to the fact that the didactics of general teaching is represented nationwide at universities and colleges of education through his own professorships with teaching and research. He is co-founder of the series of publications "Problems and Perspectives of General Education" and "Research on Didactics of General Education" by the GDSU published by Julius Klinkhardt . His numerous lectures and publications as well as his lively personal communication have had a lasting impact on the understanding and direction of the subject. His fields of work include theory and conceptions of subject teaching , scientific references in subject teaching , genetic-exemplary subject teaching , curriculum research , Martin Wagenschein's pedagogy , teacher training , teaching research . In his main work "Sachunterricht und Bildung" he develops a theory of the Sachunterricht using the approach of genetic teaching and learning. He presents the subjects of non-fiction, its objective, intellectual and methodological content in nine dimensions based on domains of knowledge, relates them to the learning potential of children and applies them to the practice of teaching. The foundation of education requires clarification of things, processes of understanding and the development of competence. His cooperation with Japanese scientists, in particular with Nobuyuki Harada from the Japanese Society for Life Studies, has contributed to the fact that didactic concepts of general teaching are also received in Japan.
