history

After the founding on May 1, 1834 by Friedrich Julius Klinkhardt in Leipzig, the focus of the publishing work was soon placed on education . In 1861 the publishing house was expanded to include a printing company . In 1871 Friedrich Julius Klinkhardt acquired the Gustav Scheltersche foundry in which fonts were produced. In 1920 the company was bought by H. Berthold AG, after which it was merged with several other acquired foundries and continued as the Böttger-Klinkhardt branch.

In 1870 Bruno and Robert Julius Klinkhardt took over the management of the publishing house and continued to expand the publishing house. Thus, with a publishing house in Berlin in 1881 and the Manz'schen kk Hof publishing and university bookstore in Vienna, two takeovers were completed in 1883. Shortly before the beginning of World War I , the publishing house had around 900 employees.

Wilhelm Julius Klinkhardt managed the publishing house during the war, inflation and the global economic crisis. During this time the printing works had to be given up. In 1929, Walther took over Julius Klinkhardt, who began to rebuild the publishing house after the head office was destroyed by bomb damage on December 4, 1943 and the company moved to Bad Heilbrunn in 1946.

From 1964 to 1995 the publishing house was run by Michael and Peter Julius Klinkhardt. Peter Julius Klinkhardt left active business in 1992. During these years the schoolbook program was abandoned and the company established as an educational science publisher. 1995 Andreas Klinkhardt took over the management of the publishing house. In 2006 the publishing house joined Uni-Taschenbuch.
