Walter Koechner
Walter Koechner (born February 7, 1937 in Stuttgart ) is an American electrical engineer who deals with solid-state lasers and laser applications and is the author of several standard works on solid-state lasers.
Koechner earned his diploma as electrical engineer at the Technical University of Stuttgart and received his doctorate in electrical engineering at the Technical University of Vienna in 1965 ( investigation of the amplification possibilities of millimeter waves in semiconductor plasmas ). In Vienna he was research assistant at the Institute for High Frequency Technology. In 1965 he went to the USA. From 1967 to 1969 he was at Hughes Aircraft and then in laser development at Union Carbide . In the late 1960s he did research for the US Army.
He is the founder of Fibertek in Herndon, Virginia , which specializes in the development of solid-state lasers and laser technology for remote sensing and optical radar. In the 1980s, he also researched simulations of the thermal radiation from nuclear weapon explosions with flash tubes and direction-sensitive detectors for gamma and neutron radiation from nuclear weapon explosions in remote sensing.
He has been a member of the IEEE since 1964 .
