Walter Müller (musician)

Walter Müller (born July 2, 1909 in Hildesheim , † after 1964) was a German violist and university professor.

Life

Müller was born the son of a businessman. At the age of ten he received violin lessons from Kobelt in Hildesheim, then from Pfeiffer in Göttingen. After graduating from the Andreas Realgymnasium in Hildesheim , he started training as a bookseller . Also active in music, after two years he studied viola with Hans Mahlke at the Berlin University of Music . He was further influenced by the music educators Gustav Havemann , Carl Flesch , Karl Klingler and Emanuel Feuermann . In Berlin he was supported by the Emil Bohnke Foundation. In 1933 he also received the Mendelssohn Prize.

In autumn 1934 he got a job as solo violist in the Landesorchester Gau Berlin . From 1935 to 1939 he was violist in the orchestra of the Berlin State Opera . From 1939 to 1955 he was solo violist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra .

From 1954 he taught at the Northwest German Music Academy Detmold , where he became professor for viola and chamber music in 1955 .

Before 1945 he belonged to the Rudolf Schultz Quartet and the Kulenkampff Quartet . From 1945 to 1950 he was a member of the Bastiaan Quartet and from 1953 to 1962 of the Strub Quartet .

He was a member of the German Alpine Club and the Wilhelm Busch Society .

Müller, a Protestant, was married in his second marriage and had two children.
