Walter Mackenthun (born August 17, 1882 Berlin ; † 1948 ) was a German aviation pioneer and co-initiator of military aviation.

Life

His parents were the government builder Ernst Mackenthun (* July 17, 1844) and Anna Louise Stein (* February 14, 1853); his brother Friedbert (born July 13, 1878).

On March 7, 1911, he acquired his flight license (No. 72) at the Döberitz flying school and became a lieutenant. During the First World War, from 1914 to 1917 he was a captain and squadron leader of the Habsheim Combat Operations Command (renamed Jasta 15 in September 1916 ). From 1917 he and Egon von Rieben were managing directors of the Deutsche Luft-Reederei, founded on December 13, 1917 as a study company .

In mid-August 1918, Mackenthun and von Rieben tried in vain to persuade Hugo Junkers to enter into a manufacturing joint venture with the parent company AEG for the Junkers F 13 . Around 1926 he became editor of the "Luft-Magazin" and in 1929 head of the publishing house "Propaganda Mackenthun". From 1927 to 1939 he was also the managing director of the traditional aviation association of the Alte Adler . Before 1945 he was a member of the old IATA .
