Walter Mahr has settled in the Franconian town of Bubenreuth , which holds the leading position nationwide as a violin-making metropolis, as a fourth generation violin maker. His maternal grandfather was a mandolin maker in the music town of Schönbach (now Luby), and his great-grandfather was also a violin maker. Walter Mahr showed his inclination for a craft profession very early on. After a three-year apprenticeship, Walter Mahr passed his journeyman's examination as first chamber winner of the 1983 class. Mahr spent two years as a journeyman with his teacher Ernst-Heinrich Roth , with the cello maker Lothar Semmlinger and with Roderich Paesold. In 1990 the master craftsman examination at the Chamber of Crafts in Nuremberg followed and the subsequent establishment of his own workshop. Since January 2000 Mahr has been a publicly appointed and sworn expert in the violin making trade.

Walter Mahr discovered his fondness for the cello during his training as a violin maker and over the years made a name for himself as a specialist in cellos.

Walter Mahr manufactures and lends violins , violas and cellos from student instruments to handcrafted master instruments. In the area of sound improvements he works very closely with musicians from all areas. From this point at the latest, Mahr calls himself a "Luthologist". Walter Mahr had this title protected in March 2014 at the German Patent Office in Munich (acc .: 302014 016495.7 / 42). The Luthologe is a word created from the word Luthier (French for violin maker / instrument maker) in conjunction with the word Logos (ancient Greek for intellectual ability and what it produces). The term Luthologe therefore describes someone who is knowledgeable in the field of string instrument making.

Amber arches

In 1998 Mahr founded a company for a special arch design. It is the difficult process of making amber bows. The 50 million year old amber resin (fossil resin from extinct coniferous trees, mainly found on the Baltic Sea) is used here in the manufacture of string instruments.

Walter Mahr is also known as a restorer of valuable violins. In his workshop, violins by Antonio Testore (famous contemporary of Stradivari ) to Andrea Guarneri (1626–1698) and Giovanni Battista Guadagnini (1711–1786) were brought back to life.
