Walter Michael Rafelsberger (born October 3, 1978 in St. Johann in Tirol ) is an Austrian filmmaker and media artist .

Life

Rafelsberger grew up as a Protestant teacher's son in Kirchdorf in Tirol . In 1986 he first came into contact with a computer. Until 1990 he learned graphics and game programming in BASIC on a Commodore PET 2001 by himself . In 1997 he graduated from the St. Johann high school in Tyrol with the Matura. He is not allowed to graduate interdisciplinary in computer science and art education . He started working on his first videos in 1994, followed by an intensive occupation with video and 3D animation.

In 1998 he started studying MultiMediaArt at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences , specializing in 3D animation. His goal is to gain a foothold in computer game design. With the realization that the game development scene was heavily commercialized in the course of the 1990s, however, disillusionment and other interests come to the fore, especially in the direction of film and artistic projects in the media sector.

In 2001, together with Markus Loder-Taucher, the animated film Raumstation Kuhbase was created , which received the main prize at the 2001 Film: riss Festival of Publizistik Salzburg and was nominated for the 2001 Prix MultiMediaAustria award as part of the “sirup.tv” project. First contact with director Virgil Widrich comes in spring . While still studying, intensive work began on the animated film Fast Film , which premiered in 2003 at the Cannes International Film Festival .

In the summer of 2003, Rafelsberger began with the conception of " RhNav - Rhizome Navigation " based on Gilles Deleuzes and Félix Guattaris Thousand Plateaus .

In the course of the crisis surrounding the “ Diagonale Festival of Austrian Films” in 2004, Rafelsberger worked in the core team on the reorganization and successful reorientation of the festival in just three months. In autumn 2004, the video installation Collage Hans Moser 1880-1964 was created for the Austrian Theater Museum in collaboration with “checkpointmedia AG” . The several months of work on the video Sunday Blossom to the music of the same name by "kilo" (Markus Urban and Florian Bogner) will be completed and will be shown for the first time in September 2005.

Walter Michael Rafelsberger lives in Kössen (Tyrol).
