Walter Niggeler

Walter Niggeler (born November 28, 1878 in Palazzolo sull'Oglio (Brescia), † December 17, 1964 in Baden AG ) was an important Swiss coin collector .

Walter Niggeler came from a rich family, but did not take over his father's textile business, but joined Brown, Boveri & Cie in 1906 after attending grammar school in Bern from 1889–1900 and studying at ETH Zurich . a. Between 1918 and 1943 he was chief engineer in the department for energy conversion and distribution. Walter Niggeler is considered one of the great collectors of the early days of the Swiss coin trade. His eccentric life as a bachelor in an apartment overflowing with art treasures and coin boxes is legendary.

The Niggeler collection was an important general collection that, in addition to ancient coins, included Italy and Switzerland. It consisted of six main parts: 1.) The Celtic and Greek coins, 2.) The Greek coins of the Roman Empire, 3.) The coins of the Roman Republic, 4.) The coins of the Roman Empire, 5.) Swiss coins, 6.) Italian coins.

The collection was best known for the high quality that Niggeler collected at a time when the quality awareness of collectors was not as developed as it is today. From 1965–1967 it was dissolved jointly by the Münzen und Medalen AG Basel and the numismatic department of Bank Leu in four auctions.
