Walter Panhofer

Walter Panhofer (born January 3, 1910 ; † April 23, 2003 in Vienna ) was an Austrian pianist and piano teacher .

Live and act

Panhofer studied with Franz Schmidt , Friedrich Wührer and Walter Gieseking . He then performed as a chamber musician a. a. with Willi Boskovsky repeatedly to the public, further u. a. as a soloist with the Vienna Philharmonic and Vienna Symphony Orchestra as well as a major orchestra in London. As a versatile chamber musician, he has also performed with the famous teacher of Friedrich Guldas , Bruno Seidlhofer . With him he played the world premiere of Seidlhofer's piano version of Bach's “Art of Fugue” in Berlin. Panhofer also recorded a number of chamber music records for Decca (London), which are now out of stock in stores. For several decades he was a full professor of piano and piano chamber music at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna , now the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna . His lessons were primarily a school of hearing, and in this regard he was strongly influenced by the “Leimer-Gieseking method” of his last teacher, Gieseking. His best-known students include pianists and pedagogues like Peter Effler, Marialena Fernandes, Michael Hrubý , Gottfried Hemetsberger , Igo Koch and Ugo Cividino. Panhofer was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery . In January 2010 the University of Vienna organized a memorial concert for his 100th birthday.
