Walter Schevenels

Walter Schevenels (* 1894 ; † March 6, 1966 in Brussels ) was a Belgian and international trade union official. He was ITUC General Secretary and, after 1945, General Secretary of the European Regional Organization of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unionists (ICFTU).

Life

Schevenels was the son of the founder of the Belgian Metalworkers Association. He first learned the trade of toolmaker . In 1921 he became a full-time union official. As a part-time job, he regularly lectured at the Workers' College in Brussels and at the Adult Education Center in Antwerp . From 1929 he was general secretary of the IGB, from 1933 he supported the German trade union movement in the resistance against National Socialism .

In 1945 he took on the role of Deputy General Secretary in the World Trade Union Confederation with responsibility for industrial unions. After the ICFTU was founded, he became Secretary General of the European Regional Organization.
