Walter von Forster

Walter von Forster (born June 15, 1915 in Nuremberg , † 2002 in Herrsching am Ammersee ) was a German composer.

Life

From the age of six Forster learned piano and harmony with Leonhard Stirnweiß . He completed a degree in composition and church music in Munich. At an early age he devoted himself to his own compositions, some of which were performed at chamber concerts for contemporary music in Nuremberg during his visit to Joseph Haas ' master class . These included works for piano, the string quartet and song cycles. During the Second World War he gave private lessons and in 1943 was employed as a choirmaster and organist at the Stephanuskirche in Munich-Nymphenburg. In 1946 he moved to the newly opened State University of Music in Munich. Walter von Forster taught there as a teacher of music theory and was eventually promoted to professor. After his retirement in 1979 he worked as a freelance composer.

Walter von Forster's oeuvre includes hundreds of works. The main focus of his work is on vocal and chamber music as well as instrumental music for solo instruments.

His estate is in the music department of the Bavarian State Library in Munich . His compositions are all available as originals or in printed sheet music, but a large part of his work has never been performed and has not been published or has only recently been published.
