Pineapple

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The sports and adventure pool Wananas is a swimming pool in Herne . It was opened in December 2016 after around two years of construction and replaces the old Wananas combined bath, which burned down to the ground in a major fire in November 2011. It is one of the few public swimming pools that have been newly built in North Rhine-Westphalia in recent years. The building complex is characterized by its distinctive architecture with a glass facade up to eight meters high, which encompasses three sides of the building and ensures a light interior.

Pineapple

The name goes back to a play on words with the location in the Wanne-Eickel district .

description

The Wananas has a pool for recreational swimmers and families as well as a training pool for athletes, schools and clubs. The new building replaces the old Wananas and the Eickel indoor pool, which last served as a school and club pool until it was closed in January 2017.

Adventure pool

The adventure pool includes play attractions such as a 65-meter tube slide , wide slide, flow channel, grotto and climbing wall on a water surface of 380 m² . Two swimming lanes with a guidance system on the side of the pool allow collision-free laps without oncoming traffic.

The children's paddling areas with play equipment include a mini pool (18 m²) with a water depth of 25 centimeters and a toddler pool (25 m²). Here the water is 45 centimeters deep.

A 10 × 8 meter pool is available outside. The lawn offers space to relax and sunbathe as well as two playgrounds for children.

Sports pool

In the sports pool there is a 25-meter competition pool with five lanes and a water depth of 1.80 to 3.80 meters as well as a 1-meter diving board and a 3-meter diving tower.

In addition to the sports pool, there is a teaching pool and a course pool. Sports clubs in Herne, from swimming clubs to diving clubs and canoeists, train in the sports pool as well as in the neighboring 16.8 × 10 meter teaching pool. Schools in Herne also use the sports pool for their swimming lessons. The sports pool is open to the public early in the morning and on weekends.

Courses

In the 8 × 8 meter course pool, the Wananas offers an exercise program for children and adults: from getting used to the water for infants to learning to swim for children to aqua jogging for active athletes. The course area is spatially separated so that lessons and training can take place undisturbed by the rest of the pool. The lifting floor can be adjusted continuously.

sauna

The sauna area in Wananas includes a classic Finnish sauna, a salt sauna as a low-temperature sauna and a sauna lounge with gastro service. There is also a relaxation room and a sauna garden. The 50-degree textile sauna in the adventure pool is intended for sauna beginners. It is also used to warm up after swimming.

gastronomy

In the adventure pool there is an open-plan restaurant with a counter area. The glass front of the guest room can be opened to the adventure pool, so that a direct transition is possible.

history

The old Wananas leisure pool in the Wanne district was completely destroyed in a major fire on November 10, 2011 due to a technical defect. From its opening in 1994 until the major fire, it was a popular meeting place for families. The bathroom counted around 3.5 million visitors during this time. Many visitors came from neighboring cities in the Ruhr area, where there was no comparable swimming offer.

In the covered part, the facility had a water play area with a pirate ship, water maze, 50-meter water slide as well as a sports and multi-purpose pool, a sauna and a steam bath. The outdoor pool included a swimming pool and a lawn for sunbathing.

The name "Wananas" is a suitcase word from the terms "tub" - the bathroom is located in the Wanne district - and the tropical fruit "pineapple". It was selected and awarded after a call to the people of Herne to find a suitable name for the new bathroom.

The forerunner of the bath was the outdoor bathtub in the same place. It was opened to the public in 1966 and finally closed in 1992 after 26 years of operation.
