Wang Yuanqi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wang Yuanqi ( 王 原 祁 , Wáng Yuánqí ) (* 1642 ; † 1715 ), stage name Maojing ( 茂 京 , Màojīng ), friendship name Lutai ( 麓 臺 , Lùtái ), born in Taicang ( 太倉 , Tàicāng ), Jiangsu was a Chinese painter.

Life

In 1670, Wang Yuanqi passed the civil service examination and later became Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Finance. In 1705 he and four other people were commissioned by the Kangxi emperor to carry out a comprehensive study of painting and calligraphy. This was also an official recognition of his artistic work. In 1708 the study was published under the title "Comments on calligraphy and painting from the Peiwen studio", "Peiwenzhai shuhuapu" ( 佩 文 斋 书画 谱 , Pèiwén zhāi shū huà pú ).

As the grandson of the famous painter Wang Shimin ( 王時敏 , Wáng Shímǐn ), (1592–1680), he received a scholarly education. He presented his art theory in the text “Notes on the rain window” ( 雨 窗 漫笔 , Yǚchuāng Mànbǐ ). In particular, the “Discussion of the Ten Principles of Painting” ( 论 画 十 则 , Lùn huà shí zé ) contained in these notes influenced future generations of painters. Together with Wang Shimin and the painter scholars Wang Jian ( 王 鑑 , Wáng Jiàn ), (1598–1677) and Wang Hui ( 王 翬 , Wáng Huī ), (1632–1717), he is one of the "four Wang" of the Qing Time.
