Wang Zhiliang

Wang Zhiliang (* 1941 in Xushui ) is a former Chinese table tennis player and trainer. He became world champion in doubles in 1963.

Career

In 1961, Wang Zhiliang was appointed to the Chinese national team. When he first participated in the World Cup in 1961 , he was still without a medal. He celebrated his greatest successes at the 1963 World Cup in Prague. In the singles he made it to the semifinals, where he lost to his compatriot Li Furong . In doubles with Zhang Xielin he became world champion after a final victory against Chuang Tse-Tung / Xu Yinsheng .

Two years later, at the 1965 World Cup , he was unable to defend the double title with the same partner. Again the same pairs faced each other in the final, but this time Chuang Tse-Tung / Xu Yinsheng had the upper hand.

In the ITTF world rankings , Sun Mei-ying was ranked 6th in 1964 and 1965.

After the end of his active career, Wang Zhiliang worked as a national coach from 1970. He was responsible for the women’s players who won several medals at the 1971 World Cup under his direction .

Private

Wang Zhiliang studied at the Sports University in Tianjin . In 1968 he married the Chinese national player Huang Yu-Huan. He has two children with her. Because of the Cultural Revolution , the family emigrated to Hong Kong, where Wang Zhiliang worked as a trainer with his father-in-law.
