Li Furong
Li Furong ( Chinese 李富榮 / 李富荣 , Pinyin Lǐ Fùróng , W.-G. Li Fu-Jung ; * 1942 in Shanghai ) is a former Chinese table tennis player and official. He is three times vice world champion.
Career as a table tennis player
Li Furong played penholder style. In 1961 he won the Chinese national championship in singles, doubles (with Zhuang Zedong ) and mixed (with Han Yucheng).
From 1961 to 1973 he took part in five world championships . He was runner-up in the singles world championship three times in a row behind Zhuang Zedong , namely in 1961 , 1963 and 1965 . At these World Cups he reached the semi-finals in doubles with Wang Jiasheng, and he also won gold with the Chinese team, as well as again at the 1971 World Cup . In 1973 he ended his career as a competitive athlete.
In 1967 and 1969, China avoided the World Championships because of the Cultural Revolution .
Trainer and functionary
After the end of his active career, Li Furong coached the Chinese national team, which became world champions under his leadership in 1981 and 1983 . In 1979 he became Vice President of the Chinese Table Tennis Association. From 2001 to 2009 he was President of the Asian TT Association and Deputy President of the TT Association China.
In 1999 he was inducted into the ITTF Hall of Fame .
Private
Li Furong studied in Shanghai at the Institute of Physical Culture . He lives in Beijing.
