Vanya (biblical person)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wanja (/ ˈvanja / Hebrew : וניה, Esr 10.36  OT ) was one of the Jewish returnees from Babylon who had to expel his foreign wife at the behest of Esra ( Esra 10.36  EU ).

In the Masoretic text he is mentioned as a descendant of Bani (בני), but Bani's descendants are already dealt with in Esr 10.29  EU . A copyist's error has therefore been assumed since Ernst Bertheau and it is suggested to read Bigwai (בגוי) in Esr 10.34 .

The name is probably of Persian origin and means "lovable" here. This name can also be found on an Aramaic papyrus from the 5th century BC. Chr.

The name was erroneously given in the Luther Bible from 1545 as Naia , in the revised version from 1912 as Vanja . The Luther Bible has been writing Vanya since the revised version of 1984 . In the translation by Vinzenz Hamp and Meinrad Stenzel , the name appears as Neja .
