Carl Friedrich Keil (actually: Johann Friedrich Karl Keil ; born February 26, 1807 in Lauterbach near Oelsnitz , † May 5, 1888 in Rödlitz near Lichtenstein ) was a German Protestant theologian with a focus on Old Testament exegesis.

Keil came from a poor family of craftsmen. In 1821 he emigrated to Saint Petersburg , where he wanted to learn the carpentry trade from his uncle. Because of his weak constitution, his uncle made it possible for him to attend the German Petri School , and because of his good performance he received a scholarship to study theology, first in Estonian Dorpat , then in Berlin , where he became a student of Ernst Wilhelm Hengstenberg .

In 1833, Keil began his work at the theological faculty of the University of Dorpat , where he became an associate professor at the age of 31 and taught Old and New Testament exegesis and oriental languages for around 25 years. After retirement, he moved in 1859 to Leipzig , where he also worked on his masterpiece: the collaboration with Franz Delitzsch published Biblical Commentary on the Old Testament . This Bible Commentary was also translated into English and reprinted in North America for well over 100 years.

Keil's work was that of a deeply religious theologian who, with his well-founded historical and philological knowledge, sought a full understanding of biblical texts and a defense of the word of God against theses critical of the Bible.
