Vincent Hamp

Vinzenz Hamp (born May 4, 1907 in Eppishausen ; † January 3, 1991 in Tutzing ) was a Catholic theologian and professor of exegesis of the Old Testament at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

biography

After attending grammar school in Dillingen , Vinzenz Hamp began studying theology at the University of Munich, where he received his doctorate in theology in 1937 . Due to the Second World War, he spent a few years in pastoral care before he was able to continue his theological studies and in 1946 completed his habilitation at Munich University in the subject of Old Testament exegesis .

As early as 1945 he taught Old Testament exegesis and biblical-oriental languages as an associate professor and from 1950 as a full professor at the Freising University of Philosophy and Theology . In 1953 he was appointed professor for Old Testament exegesis at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Munich, where he worked until his retirement .

From 1957 to 1977 he was editor of the Old Testament section of the renowned Biblical Journal . The focus of Vinzenz Hamp's scientific work was on researching the Old Testament wisdom books and on the translation of the Old Testament into German ( Pattloch Bible ).

As an amateur botanist, bryologist and active member of the Bavarian Botanical Society , Hamp collected mosses and lichens, especially in southern Bavaria. The whereabouts of his Moosherbars with 1500 samples is unknown.

Hamp was a member of the Catholic student associations KDStV Agilolfia Freising and KDStV Trifels Munich (honorary member) in the Cartell Association .
