Mountain station with Sonnenalm

The Wankbahn is a monocable gondola . It leads northeast of Garmisch-Partenkirchen over the middle station to the 1780  m high Wank , a mountain on the edge of the Estergebirge .

history

The lift went into operation in 1982 and replaced the old aerial tramway built by Adolf Bleichert & Co. from 1929, which was no longer able to cope with the huge influx of visitors (waiting times of up to two hours were possible in some cases). Another disadvantage of the old Wankbahn was the location of the valley station on the outskirts of Partenkirchen: Due to the lack of parking spaces, there were often disabilities throughout the village. These problems were taken into account when building the new runway. Up to four people can be seated in the cabins of the monocable gondola, and additional gondolas can be pushed into the operation if necessary.

In the mountain station there is a self-service restaurant with a sun terrace (Sonnenalm) and a souvenir shop. The Wankhaus of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen section of the German Alpine Club is in the immediate vicinity of the mountain station .

operator

At the end of the 1990s, the Wankbahn passed from Wankbahn AG to Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG . A short time afterwards, the ski operation on the Wank was stopped due to an alleged lack of demand and the Wankbahn was declared a pure summer lift.
