Wanzlow and Bukow

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wanzlow and Bukow are the names of two historical regions on the island of Usedom .

Since the document dated to 946, in which Wanzlow is mentioned for the first time, is now considered to be false, the provincia or terra is only documented from 1128. Thanks to the locations mentioned in the documents, terra Wanzlow could be located in the southwest of Usedom. It formed a castle district, which was formed after the introduction of castellanias as administrative districts in the domain of the Pomeranian princes. The main town of the castle district was the castrum Uznam with the settlement near this castle, from which the city of Usedom later developed.

Terra Bukow , first mentioned in 1198 , occupied the northwest of the island. It was part of a castle district that stretched on both sides of the northern Peene River and whose center was Wolgast . The border between the two districts is believed to be either at Ückeritz or on the isthmus between Koserow and Zempin . The name, which means something like "Grenzort", speaks for Ückeritz.
