history

According to Klemens Stadler , a cross was depicted on Memmingen coins as early as 1180 and the eagle, the royal symbol of the Hohenstaufen, in 1191. He interprets the cross as a typical place symbol, but also leaves open a possible connection with the cross in the old imperial storm flag. As is customary elsewhere, images of seals and coats of arms developed from the coin images. In the land law book of the Schwabenspiegel, around 1275, the use of seals is specified for cities, which were originally only used by rulers. There it says Die stete suln or the island of Han, but for the sake of a lord, if you have no other strength . Just two years after Memmingen fell to the empire, a document in 1270 mentions the great city seal. The first representation is from 1286. The inscription is + SIGILLVM • CIVIVM • IN • MAEMIGIN . A massive, pearl-studded cross and half an eagle with its beak protruding over the gap can be seen in the open space. The eagle now also indicates the nationality.

From 1330 a secretion seal was used. It shows the inscription + S 'SECRETVM CIVIVM IN MEMMINGEN . The picture shows a crowned, curly king's head. A statement made by Julius Miedel that the secretion seal shows the oldest coat of arms of Memmingen has been refuted by the city seal from 1286. The imperial cities liked to use the king's head as a symbol in their coat of arms. Since around 1360 it has also appeared on the seals of the city court. However, in the late Gothic seals the king's head became smaller and smaller until it served as a coat of arms holder.

While the eagle was still shown at the back and the cross at the front of the oldest seal and later coats of arms, it has been in the front half of the shield since the 16th century. As an imperial eagle, it is also a symbol of Memmingen's imperial immediacy . The color of the coat of arms always remained the same.

It is split in gold and silver, in front in gold a half, red armored black eagle at the crack, behind in silver a red paw cross .

flag

The city colors black, red and white have been handed down since 1488. The flag is a banner flag with a crossbar. The city coat of arms is usually not shown on the banner flags. Banner flags with the city arms are only used on special occasions; this is then in the upper third. At every major festival, such as the Children's Festival and Fisherman's Day , the houses in the old town are decorated with flags in these colors.
