National coat of arms

The coat of arms of the Kingdom of Westphalia goes back to a design by the French Foreign Minister Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord . Talleyrand was commissioned with the design by Napoleon Bonaparte on June 6, 1807 .

The "terrible menagerie"

The French emperor is said to have called it a “ménagerie” - in the figurative sense of an animal park or zoo. In contrast to the abstract flag of the Kingdom of Westphalia, which is not reminiscent of any predecessor state, Talleyrand is said to have endeavored to integrate the heraldic animals of all parts of the colorfully assembled kingdom in the coat of arms . A horse , an eagle and eight lions and leopards of various colors are therefore representative of the former rulers and states .

The heart shield shows the Napoleonic eagle , in the heraldic right upper corner there is the Westphalia horse (corresponds to the Sachsenross in today's coat of arms of Lower Saxony), in the heart shield of the partial coat of arms in the left upper corner the Hessen lion .

Description of the coat of arms : The coat of arms is quartered and there is a blue heart shield with the Napoleonic golden eagle

The shield, over which the Napoleonic star hovers in gold, is hung with two medals, rests on two gold crossed sceptres and is surrounded by the crowned coat of arms . It has silver inside with feh and outside in red the golden bees .
