The War Resisters League (WRL) (German: Association of War opponents ) is an organization of the US peace movement founded in 1923 by conscientious objectors and former activists against the First World War , which still exists today . It is the oldest and most important non-religious peace organization in North America. Its national office is located on Canal Street in the southern part of the New York borough of Manhattan ( Lower Manhattan ). Subdivisions of the WRL are active in most US states with various local chapters.

In the USA it is the national section of War Resisters International , an international umbrella organization of political pacifists , anti-militarists and conscientious objectors .

Peace Award

In 1958, the organization donated the War Resisters League Peace Award , a peace prize that has been awarded almost annually since then to personalities or associations who, in accordance with the WRL, use nonviolent means to combat war and to eliminate the causes of war.

media

The War Resisters League publishes the quarterly magazine WIN through revolutionary nonviolence (translated: Profits through revolutionary nonviolence ), in which articles and interviews on the subject of the peace movement or the grassroots movement are published. The magazine is based in its name on the newspaper of a New Yowker group of activists who were close to the WRL, which was also called WIN between 1966 and 1983 to propagate the Direct Action . In this case, WIN stood for Workshop in Nonviolence (meaning workshop for nonviolence ); in March 1972, the documents stolen by the Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI were published in full here for the first time .
