Designations

The Society for German Language in Wiesbaden answered a reader question about the separator. The article mentions a number of other names for the divider, e.g. B. Goods divider, dividing wood, divider, separator, till divider, customer divider, divider etc.

In the Low German language area there is the term Miendientje (in German roughly “Meindeinchen” or “Meins-Deins”), which consists of the Low German words mien and dien (“my” and “your”). The word thus describes the separation of one's own goods on the checkout belt from those of another customer. It was also chosen in 2010 by the Institute for Low German Language (INS) as the “most recent Low German word of the year”.

In Switzerland, the term Kassentoblerone is common for the goods divider with a triangular cross-section based on the Toblerone chocolate brand .

handling

A divider in action

The customer takes the divider from a rail-shaped shelf and places it between his goods and those of his successor. When the cashier arrives, the goods separator is placed back on the rail and pushed back against the direction of the belt towards the following customers.

The product divider as an advertising medium

Originally often without inscription or without advertising, the divider is also used as an advertising space, for example for cigarettes for sale at the checkout or for self-promotion in the relevant market.

In Germany, since 2008, advertising on dividing bars has also been marketed in such a way that they have become an advertising medium for traders. At Kaufland , for example, the product dividing bars are offered as so-called cash posters through signs with two-sided advertising . This means supplementing and reinforcing the advertising effects of advertising on shopping carts (CartBoard).
