Wark on Tyne , commonly called simply Wark , is a small town and civil parish in Northumberland , 20 kilometers west of Hexham .
The name comes from the Viking term for earthworks and refers to a mound in the south of the village, the former location of the village hall.
Wark used to be the main town of Tynedale .
