life and work

After completing his master's degree as a teacher (Master of Education), Estabrooks worked for seven years in mainstream classrooms in Toronto. He went to the UK for a teaching exchange program, where he taught in an infant school that had a unit for hearing impaired children on campus . He was fascinated by hearing aids, and back in Toronto, he began a graduate school program at The Metropolitan Toronto School for the Deaf , which was primarily a "spoken language" school.

He came across auditory-verbal therapy through the work of Doreen Pollack , Helen Beebe and Susann Schmid-Giovannini , whom he also got to know personally. An audio-pedagogical course conducted by Doreen Pollack in Denver inspired him to train as an auditory-verbal therapist and spoken language specialist (LSLS Cert. AVT®).

In Canada he worked with Daniel Ling for a long time . From 1980 to 2007 he was director of the Auditory Learning Center of the Learning to Listen Foundation at North York General Hospital in Toronto.

He is a member of the College of Teachers of Ontario and an assistant professor in the Medical School of the University of Toronto . As a consultant and lecturer he is active worldwide and teaches auditory-verbal therapy and practice, auditory rehabilitation and auditory learning for deaf or hard of hearing children and adults, their relatives and therapists. It is mainly dedicated to the education and training of professionals in related child and adult disciplines.

The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing named him their global ambassador. He is co-founding director of the AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language and Auditory-Verbal International Inc. as well as Honorary Director of the Federal Association for Auditory-Verbal Therapy Germany (BVAVT) and AV Israel .
