history

The predecessor institution ( Zakład prywatny Leczniczy dla dzieci dr. Sikorskiego ) of today's hospital in 1869 in ul. Solna in Warsaw in those days as Weichselland called Kingdom of Poland established. The clinic was headed by Antoni Sikorski and initially cared for children suffering from measles , smallpox or scarlet fever . Despite difficulties on the part of the Russian authorities, funds were raised for a new building in the following years with the help of a foundation ( Stowarzyszenie Opieki dla Warszawskiego Szpitala dla Dzieci ). This new building was built on the site of the Słuszka Palace (Pałac Słuszków), parts of which were incorporated into the new building ensemble, others were demolished over the years (until 1945). Particularly important sponsors were the Princess Aleksandra Potocka (1818–1892; from the Potocki magnate family , mistress of Wilanów ) and the banker Leopold Kronenberg , as well as the entrepreneur Wilhelm Rau (1825–1899; founder of Lilpop, Rau i Loewenstein ) and Johann von Bloch , Gabriela Wrotnowska, Ambroży Zborowski and Mathias Bersohn (1824–1908). On November 18, 1875, the new building with 79 beds in what was then ul. Aleksandrii (since 1907: ul Kopernika ) was moved into.

In 1884 a separate wing was built for the treatment of infectious patients, it had 20 beds and two treatment rooms. It has also been possible to treat babies since 1934. In the same year, an X-ray machine was used for the first time ; the hospital had 200 beds after expansion. During the Warsaw Uprising in World War II , the institute was used to treat wounded insurgents. In 1945 it was re-used as a children's hospital as Miejski Szpital Dziecięcy nr 1 . From 1995 onwards there were investments in new parts of the building and renovations of the individual departments. Construction of another wing began in 2013. The hospital has departments for pediatrics , surgery , orthopedics and rehabilitation . Izabela Marcewicz-Jendrysik has headed the institute since 2009.
