history

In 1925, 19 colonial goods dealers founded the colonial goods dealers' cooperative in Pirmasens , which in 1935 joined the Rhenish-Westphalian purchasing association (REWE). Through several mergers with other regional purchasing cooperatives, REWE West Palatinate and later REWE Südwest emerged into the 1960s . In addition to the shops that were run by independent merchants and supplied by the cooperative, the cooperative also established its own markets.

In 1989 the legal form was changed from the eG to the AG and the company was renamed Südwestkauf AG . In addition, the company turned away from REWE and purchased its goods from the Swiss Markant . In the course of this, the company's own markets were also reflagged and appeared as distinctive markets . In 1994 the company changed its name to Markant Südwest AG and went public. After another name change, the company is now WASGAU Produktions & Handels AG .

The main owners are Wasgau Food Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH in Annweiler with 53.10%, Edeka Südwest GmbH in Offenburg with 24.98% and REWE Markt GmbH in Cologne with 14.84%.

In turn, Rewe-Markt GmbH holds 51 percent of Wasgau Food Beteilungsgesellchaft mbH . The remaining 49 percent is held by the Adrienne and Otmar Hornbach Foundation .
