Washington Island is about ten kilometers northeast of the northern tip of the Door Peninsula between Green Bay and Lake Michigan proper .

It belongs to Door County in the US state of Wisconsin . About 660 people live on the island all year round. The area is 60.89 km² and comprises over 92 percent of the land area of ​​the city of Washington and its entire population. The unincorporated community Detroit Harbor is also on the island.

Washington Island is the largest island in a chain of islands that separates Green Bay from the main lake of Lake Michigan. Tourism is an important economic factor on the island .

The island is separated from the Door Peninsula by the narrow Porte des Morts passage .

Northeast of the island is Rock Island with Rock Island State Park .

Washington Island is the largest island in an entire chain of islands, which form part of the Niagara strata and extends from the Door Peninsula in Wisconsin to the Garden Peninsula in Upper Michigan. Most of the people who settled on the island were Scandinavian immigrants, especially Icelanders. Today Washington Island is one of the oldest Icelandic communities in the United States and largest outside of Iceland.

Two ferry connections lead to Washington Island. Once a day, a cargo, car, and passenger ferry runs from Northport Pier on the north end of Wisconsin Highway 42 on the Door Peninsula to Detroit Harbor. The journey time is 30 minutes. Another passenger ferry connects Gills Rock with Washington Island and takes 20 minutes.
