The Inselteich moated castle is a lost moated castle in the Gehringswalde district of Selva in the Ore Mountains . The complex was probably built in the 13th or 14th century.

Description and history

The castle had a round core structure about 12 to 14 meters in diameter. In front of this there was a surrounding ditch about 8 to 10 meters wide. The maximum depth compared to the core plant plateau is 2 meters. In the south there are remains of the presumed outer wall with a base width of 6 meters and a height of 1 to 1.5 meters.

The plant can be seen as a settlement nucleus for the place Gehringswalde. Initially it consisted of an earth wall surrounded by stakes, around which the dammed village stream flowed. The name Inselteich was probably coined for the complex due to the shape it created. The complex also included a square tower, which is shown in a brick-walled crack drawing with a gable roof. Later this served as a granary. It was removed around 1830.

A similar system is still preserved today with the Pass Clause Tower in Tannenberg .

present

In the west, the trench of the plant is largely backfilled. Only in the east has a part been preserved and can be seen from the road to Warmbad .

In 1961 the complex was placed under the protection of a historical monument .
