The water chapel on the banks of the Danube in Tulln an der Donau in Lower Austria is a St. John Nepomuk consecrated chapel . It is a listed building .

history

A crucifix that was washed ashore during a flood of the Danube was set up for worship on February 21, 1729 at the water gate. A year later a chapel was built to protect it and consecrated to St. John Nepomuk.

The statues of St. John Nepomuk and Karl Borromeo were later removed from their original location and placed in front of the parish church of St. Stephen .

The late baroque water chapel is the location of an outside altar every year during the Corpus Christi procession and the scene of the All Saints' Memorial celebrations for people who drowned in the Danube.

The water chapel, with a round arch opening to the Danube, is built onto the back of a house in Wassergasse. The facade is structured with pilasters . Inside, the Holy Trinity and the Arma Christi are depicted on the Platzl vault . The crucifix is flanked by statues of Saints Mary and John carved from wood and standing on pedestals .
