Großweier moated castle

The moated castle Großweier is an abandoned moated castle near the parish church on the site of today's cemetery in the village of Großweier , a current district of Achern in the Ortenaukreis in Baden-Württemberg .

The castle was built around 1236 and is first attested in 1338 with the Lords of Großweier, who named themselves after the castle. The family had the castle, village and marrow from the margraves of Baden as a fief . After 1583 the moated castle was the seat of the Baden authorities until it was destroyed in 1689 during the Orléans War by troops of the French "Sun King" Louis XIV . 1958 to 1960 the castle was demolished. The name of the Schlossbuckel Friedhof is reminiscent of the hill on which the moated castle stood.
