The moated castle Heerse is a listed moated castle in Neuenheerse , a district of the North Rhine-Westphalian city ​​of Bad Driburg in the Höxter district .

history

The third bishop of Paderborn , Luithard (862 to 887 bishop; † 887 in Paderborn), together with his sister Walburga , had a women's monastery built here in 868 , which was placed under the patronage of the German Empire by Emperor Ludwig the Germans as early as 871 " Imperial Freiweltliches Hochadeliges Damenstift Heerse " was called.

In 1599, Ottilia von Fürstenberg (1549–1621) had the abbey building built with the same name. The former seat of the abbess is now the moated castle of Heerse. After the abolition of the monastery in 1810, the buildings and lands came into private hands. The moats of the castle are fed with the water from the nearby Nethe .

In 1989 the abbey building and the surrounding area with the gatehouse were acquired by the Honorary Consul General of Ghana , Manfred O. Schröder, and his wife Helga. They designed the interiors and set up a museum in the castle.

Todays use

Today the castle houses one of the largest private large mammal collections , a large ethnographic collection with a focus on Africa , a diverse exhibition on local history, a section on European hunting culture , a special exhibition area on German colonial history and a collection on Prussian history on an area of ​​around 2500  .

The moated castle Heerse has been accessible under a guide since 1993.

Monument protection

The moated castle was entered with the number "A 15" in the list of monuments of the city of Bad Driburg .

The entry was made on September 19, 1983; The basis for inclusion in the list of monuments is the Monument Protection Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (DSchG NRW).
