history

In 1901 it was decided to build the long planned waterworks with water tower in Forst (Lausitz) . The location of the water tower was chosen so that it was in the center of the area to be supplied with water. The design of the water tower comes from the engineer Ernst Prinz. After the city entrusted the construction to master bricklayer Lüdecke, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 1, 1902. The carrying principle for the elevated tank is based on the construction principle of Otto Intze . The construction drawing was submitted to the building police on October 12, 1902 .

A 1.10 meter thick concrete slab was poured under the basement floor , on which ring-shaped foundation walls have been placed that taper towards the top. The shaft has a wall thickness of 90 cm and in the middle there is the approx. 60 cm thick riser or pressure pipe, which is funnel-shaped connected to the elevated tank. A granite ring is bulging onto the brick shaft, on which the iron supporting structure for the elevated tank rests. The elevated tank has a diameter of 13 meters, is 8 meters high on the outside and holds 1000 m³. Due to its curved shape, it has a height of 9.19 meters in the middle. There is a narrow maintenance corridor around this elevated tank. The spire and the roof are made of a wrought iron construction.

The last work on the top of the tower was carried out in the summer of 1903, so that the regular water supply began on September 1, 1903. During the Second World War there was no major damage to the water tower, the water supply was discontinued, but it was started up again after the war.

Only the most necessary repairs were carried out in the GDR . A report from 1978 named urgent need for renovation, but this work was not carried out.

The water tower was renovated from 1990 to 1994, when the water tank was used as a pressure equalization tank. The actual extent of the damage only became visible after the start of the renovation , so that the masonry of the container housing was removed down to the granite ring and renewed while maintaining the external appearance. The top of the tower was renovated on the ground, for this purpose it was brought to the ground by a large crane, complete with a hood, and then placed back on the tower after the work was completed. Furthermore, renovation measures were carried out on the water tank, shaft and in the entrance portal.
