The white painted, carefully restored Neumünster water tower is on Christianstrasse. It was built from 1899 to 1900 on the waterworks site. At 48 meters, it is the tallest water tower in Schleswig-Holstein.

Building history

The "Baltische AG Licht-, Kraft- und Wasserwerke Neumünster" built the water tower together with the waterworks and an electricity company . With its steam engines and generators, the E-Werk supplied the electricity to drive the piston pumps. These pumped the water from 18 tubular wells approx. 30 m deep.

In June 1900, Neumünster was supplied with electricity and water centrally for the first time. Due to construction defects, the tower had to be renovated just six months after completion. Decorative beams and some windows were removed.

The corporation was converted into a GmbH in 1902. This became the property of the city in 1911 (today Stadtwerke Neumünster ).

Building

The water tower is a total of 48 m high. The 30 m high conical shaft (substructure) carries a protruding round elevated tank. Its steel tub holds 950 m³ of water. The container is encased in a cantilevered framework construction. A flat conical roof with a ventilation lantern closes the tower at the top. The tower diameter is 10.7 m at the bottom, 8.2 m below the elevated tank, and the jacketed elevated tank is 12 m in diameter. Due to its age and the weather, the tower now leans 24 millimeters to the northeast.

use

The tower is still fully functional. It belongs to the Stadtwerke Neumünster (SWN) and is part of the city's 242 km long water supply system. Today it is mainly used to equalize pressure in the network and as an extinguishing water reservoir (as of 2011).

Light work of art

On November 2nd, 2010 the light art work KELVIN by the Hamburg artist Till Nowak was opened at the Neumünster water tower. It consists of LED lighting, the color of which changes depending on the current outside temperature. At cold temperatures the light turns yellow to red tones, at warm temperatures it turns purple to blue tones. In addition, four gobo projectors project a static line graphic onto the tower, which is coordinated with the architecture of the tower as "mapped projection". The light installation is permanent and can be seen every night from sunset to sunrise. The project was financed by the Association for the Promotion of Art in Neumünster eV and Stadtwerke Neumünster and was supervised by Claus Friede * Contemporary Art.
