Watertoren Oranjestad

The Oranjestad Watertoren is one of the first water towers to be built on the island of Aruba . It is located in the capital Oranjestad at JG Emanstraat 67.

history

The water shortage in the early twentieth century led to the establishment of the Landwasser supply (Landswatervoorzieningsdienst) (LWV) in 1928. At that time, the LWV was responsible for supplying drinking water to the population on Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao .

In 1933, the first seawater desalination plant was put into operation in Aruba and the central pipeline network was installed in the urban area of Oranjestad and San Nicolas. After a short time, the pressure in the water network was too low during the main periods of use. Therefore, in 1934 it was decided to build two water towers. The water tower of San Nicolas was put into operation on August 14, 1939 and that of Oranjestad on November 4, 1939. The water tower has been a listed building since 1996 and is registered in the Lijst van monumenten op Aruba under the number 01-007.

The Watertoren Oranjestad was completely restored in 2011 and is owned by today's water utility Water- en Energiebedrijf Aruba NV , but is no longer used as a water tower.
