The Padborg water tower in Padborg in Syddanmark was originally a brick water tower at Padborg train station, which was replaced in the 1960s by today's somewhat taller concrete structure in pretty much the same place. This took over its name and its water supply task .

location

The water tower is located on Industrivej Street, which runs northwards and, as the street name suggests, in the Padborg industrial area . The Fredericia – Flensburg railway runs from north to south, 90 meters to the east . The associated station buildings are 200 meters to the east. Padborg's water tower can be seen from afar and, as the town's tallest building, its defining “ landmark ”.

background

Some homeowners had already founded a water supply company before 1919 in the then small town of Pattburg . The company operated a waterworks that only had a capacity of 3 m³ of water per hour and only eight properties were connected to it. In 1919 the mill owner Nicolaus Schmidt bought this waterworks.

After the referendum in Schleswig in 1920, Pattburg became part of Denmark, became a border town with a border station and was given the Danish name Padborg. Numerous employees of the Danish State Railways , the Danish police and the border gendarmerie have settled in Padborg. The place began to grow in terms of population and structure. The waterworks was also expanded, resulting in several new boreholes and a more extensive pipe network. In 1939 the Frøslev waterworks was taken over.

When exactly Padborg's water tower was built is unclear. It probably already existed in the 1930s. In 1965/66 Arthur Schmidt, who had inherited the waterworks from his father, had today's water tower built a few meters from the old one and dismantled its predecessor.

The neighboring mill complex, which his brother had inherited, was demolished in the 1970s and replaced by a new building. In 1971 the municipality of Bov bought the waterworks and thus the water tower from Arthur Schmidt.

Today's water tower is 28 meters high and has a water capacity of 500 m³. The architects were Kjæhr & Trillingsgaard . The architecture is roughly based on the design of the previous water tower, whose pointed helmet was not adopted. The water tower still serves the local water supply today .
