The Varel water tower is located at Oldenburger Straße 62 in the city of Varel , about 50 meters away from the street. With its 50.5 meters height, it is one of the city's landmarks. From the viewing platform at a height of 41.5 meters, there is a view of the Jade Bay and the villages of the Frisian Wehde .
Building
The water tower , built in 1913/14, has a close architectural connection with an attached residential building with a half-hipped roof , which has elements of homeland security architecture. In the base area, the octagonal tower is surrounded by a wreath of blind arcades . The simple brick walls are only loosened up by a few windows in the lower area. In the upper third, two elongated window strips in each of the eight side walls structure the building. Behind it is the water tank. At the top, the wide openings in the wall adjoin the viewing platform. The octagonal, curved roof is covered with copper.
History of the water supply in Varel
Up until the beginning of the 20th century, the citizens of Varel obtained water from decentralized shallow wells or rainwater cisterns . The water quality then no longer met the hygienic requirements. In 1913, the construction of a central water supply began. The area at the Vareler Bäker opposite the city forest was chosen as the location for the waterworks with the water tower. In 1914 the plant was completed and could go into operation.
In 1968, in addition to the water tower, a deep tank was put into operation in Hafenstrasse. This was necessary in order to guarantee the water pressure and the amount of water even at peak times. In 1982 a pure water chamber with a capacity of 2 × 750 m³ was built.
The Varel water supply has been run as a municipal company since the beginning. In 1956 the city transferred the technical and commercial management to EWE AG .
Water supply today
The water tower and waterworks are still in operation for the water supply. The elevated tank in the tower is connected to a network of 62 kilometers of pipelines with around 3,630 water house connections. In addition, the water tower is used as a lookout tower and is open daily between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (summer) / 4 p.m. (winter) for this purpose. (As of March 2011)
