The water Westfalen GmbH is a water utility in the eastern Ruhr area , the respective half of the GELSENWASSER and DEW21 belongs. The company's official headquarters are in Dortmund , but the company's operations are based in Schwerte . Since it was founded in 2001, Wasserwerke Westfalen has been an upstream supplier for the two parent companies, which supply a total of around 1.5 million people in the southern Münsterland, the central and eastern Ruhr area and the northern Sauerland directly or indirectly via other municipal utilities. In 2016, the number of employees was 135 with a drinking water supply of 101 million cubic meters.
The company extracts drinking water from the Ruhr in six waterworks :
- Echthausen waterworks
- Halingen waterworks
- Hengsen waterworks
- Villigst waterworks
- Westhofen waterworks
- Witten waterworks
In addition to the water supply, the company is also involved in energy generation through five run-of-river power plants that generate electricity in Echthausen, Fröndenberg , Hengsen, Villigst and Westhofen (approx. 22.5 million kilowatt hours in 2016). It also operates four photovoltaic systems in Echthausen, Hengsen, Villigst and Witten.
