Vasily Ivanovich Komarov ( Russian Василий Иванович Комаров , actually Василий Терентьевич Петров / Vasily Terentievich Petrov * 1877 , according to other data in 1878 , in Vitebsk , Russian Empire ; † 18th June 1923 in Moscow , Soviet Union ), known as The Wolf of Moscow , was a Russian or Soviet serial killer who confessed to having murdered 33 people between 1921 and 1923 and was therefore executed by shooting .

Life

Vasily Petrov was born in Vitebsk Governorate in 1871, 1877 or 1878, depending on the source. He had five brothers and both parents are believed to be alcoholics who abused their children.

In his youth, Komarov served in the Imperial Russian Army for four years . During the Russian Civil War he changed his name and was called Vasily Ivanovich Komarow from then on. At the age of 40, he was arrested for robbing a shop. He is said to have been violent towards both his wife and his two children.

Series of murders and investigations

From the end of 1921 until the beginning of 1923, the police in Moscow pursued a series of murders of twenty-one men, each of whose bodies were found individually in sacks that were thrown in the garbage in the Shabolovki district in Moscow. The bodies were almost always found on Thursday and Saturday, the days when horses in the area were handled at the horse market. Since Wasilli Komarov was often seen with customers, but rarely sold horses, he came under suspicion of being in connection with the series of murders.

When investigators searched Komarov's stables on the pretext of looking for illegal alcohol, they found the body of his last victim, already packed in a sack, under a haystack. Komarov was immediately arrested and then quickly confessed to his crimes. In total, he claimed to have murdered thirty-three of his customers.

Trial, sentencing and execution

The murder trial against Komarov began on June 7, 1923 and took place in the halls of the Moscow Polytechnic Museum to accommodate the many spectators. In the early morning of June 8th Komarov was sentenced to be shot within the next few days.

The sentence was carried out on June 18, 1923.
