Wassyl Holoborodko
Wassyl Iwanowytsch Holoborodko ( Ukrainian Василь Іванович Голобородько ; born April 7, 1945 in Adrianopil , Luhansk Oblast ) is a Ukrainian poet.
life and work
Wassyl Holoborodko was born in 1945 in the eastern Ukrainian village of Adrianpol, in the Luhansk Oblast. In 1964 he began studying Ukrainian Studies at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev , from 1965 he was a student at the Pedagogical Institute of the Donetsk State University , but was banned from studying in 1967 because of the spread of samizdat literature on campus. Between 1968 and 1970 he completed his army service in the far east of the Soviet Union, after which he returned to his native village Adrianopil, where he worked as an electrician in a collective farm and in coal mining. In 2001 he finally made up his degree at the University of Luhansk.
Holoborodko made his poetic debut in 1963 in the literary magazines Literaturna Ukrajina and Dnipro , but his first volume of poetry "Letjuče vikonce" was not approved for print after he refused to cooperate with the KGB . From 1969 to 1988 his works were finally banned from being printed in the Soviet Union and only circulated in samizdat. The exile publisher Smoloskyp published "Letjuče vikonce" in 1970 in the USA.
In the independent Ukraine, his works have received several awards, including the 1994 Taras Shevchenko Prize .
The writer Oksana Sabuschko campaigned in July 2014 to nominate Holoborodko for the Nobel Prize for Literature.
