Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen ( Thai วัด ปากน้ำ ภาษีเจริญ ; also short: Wat Paknam - about: monastery at the river mouth ; own name: Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen ) is a Buddhist temple ( Wat ) in Bangkok , the capital of Thailand . It is a Third Class Royal Temple . Wat Paknam is located in Bangkok's Phasi Charoen district at the confluence of three khlongs : Khlong Bangkok Yai ( คลอง บางกอกใหญ่ ) flows north, Khlong Phasi Charoen ( คลอง ภาษีเจริญ ) west and Khlong Dan ( คลอง ด่าน ) east of the temple.

The abbot Somdet Phra Maha Ratchamangalacharn , as the longest-serving monk in the Somdet rank, was appointed provisionally supreme monk patriarch on October 28, 2013 .

Building history

Wat Paknam was built during the Ayutthaya period - "between 1488 and 1630". King Rama III. had it renovated and then granted it the status of "Royal Third Class Temple". King Mongkut had a customs post built directly at the temple at the mouth of the Khlong Phasi Charoen, which connects the Mae Nam Tha Chin ( Tha Chin River ) with the Mae Nam Chao Phraya via the Khlong Bangkok Yai . Since then, locals call the temple Wat Paknam , which means "temple at the mouth of the river".

Meditation center

Wat Paknam has had an important meditation school for a long time, so hundreds of monks live here during the rainy season ( Vassa ).

Around 1914 the monk ( Bhikkhu ) Phra Mongkol-Thepmuni ("Luang Pho Sot"; 1885-1959) started a new meditation movement. Luang Pho Sot claimed to have rediscovered Dhammakaya meditation and claimed that it was the path on which the Buddha ( Siddhartha Gautama ) also attained enlightenment. In 1916 Luang Pho Sot became abbot of Wat Paknam. His followers later founded Wat Phra Dhammakaya , which received great approval from the local population but also bitter criticism. Wat Paknam and the Dhammakaya meditation became so well known.
