Watkyn Vaughan († 1456)

Watkyn Vaughan (also Walter Vaughan ) († April 1456 ) was a Welsh nobleman.

Watkyn Vaughan was the eldest son of Roger Fychan and his wife Gwladus, daughter of Dafydd Gam . His father died in 1415 at the Battle of Azincourt , after his death his mother married Sir William ap Thomas . Watkyn inherited the family seat of Bredwardine Castle in Herefordshire . He was murdered by an arrow in Bredwardine at the beginning of April 1456. His half-brother William Herbert and his cousin Walter Devereux had the guilty executed after a show trial in Hereford , the murder was sung about in an elegy by the Welsh poet Hywel Swrdwal . According to older sources, he died as a supporter of the House of York at the Battle of Mortimer's Cross , which is wrong.

Vaughan had married Elizabeth, a daughter of Sir Henry Wogan of Pembrokeshire. He had numerous children with her, and his son Sir Thomas Vaughan became his heir. Another son of his was the soldier William Vaughan .
